Meet the Founder: Brek Goin - "A Man in Motion Stays in Motion."
For those who don’t know the founding story, I wanted to share it with you…
Born in 1940, my grandpa has had a long history in the logging industry.
From hooking logs in the backwoods to road building, he’s no stranger to the equipment life.
As a kid, I’d spend every weekend at my grandparents.
At an early age, he had introduced me to his 1986 D3 CAT and his excavator.
Every time I visited I’d always ask, “what are we working on this weekend!”
I rode in the equipment as we graded roads, loaded rock and moved brush.
Throughout my teens and early 20’s, I then worked with my dad doing drywall.
By this time, I ventured off to college to pursue a career in finance.
After graduating, I felt like finance wasn’t for me.
I went back to the job site with my dad and that’s when the light bulbs went off.
I started noticing the stigma around the industry and the problems around finding good people.
During this time, I created a bidding site.
While building it, I learned more about workforce development, the troubles of finding skilled trades and getting people into the industry.
I pivoted.
I turned to social media and created Builders of insta as a way to showcase awesome people building awesome things.
I wanted to help contribute to building a better image for the industry.
I continued the Builders of Insta gig, moved to two new cities (Seattle then to San Francisco), couch surfed and founded Hammr to get back to my roots — workforce development.
My focus became the people in the field, the labor shortage, and building a movement for the next generation of trades.
People like my grandfather, my father, and millions of other tradesmen, build everything that exists.
They are part of the reason why I wake up to do what I do.
Bringing this full circle, I recently asked my grandpa what his biggest piece of life advice would be.
"A man in motion stays in motion.”
He turned 80 this year.
And this man still in motion.
