Meet the Builder: Jeff Sweenor - "How You Do One Thing Is How You Do Everything."
How'd you get into the building business?
I got into the building business sort of by accident...
I grew up in a five-generation family chocolate and confectionery business and helped with that until shortly after college, when I decided I wanted to build my own house.
I took the summer off to work on it, and I just loved it.
I spent the next 15 years getting hands-on experience, wearing a tool belt and learning how to build the best house.
I transitioned in the second half of my career, about the last 15 years, to focusing on building a company that builds best houses.
What makes you excited about the future of construction?
We’re really passionate about how our houses perform, and I’m excited about where building science is taking us.
We want our homes to be beautiful and comfortable, but also judged on whether they are highly efficient, healthy to live in, and durable in our harsh coastal environment.
It’s funny because we’re working on a prominent historic restoration now, and it underscores the legacy of what we leave behind.
I hope people will be fighting about ways to preserve our craftsmanship in historic district meetings more than a century from now!
What's your mantra?
“How you do anything is how you do everything.”
After a successful collegiate rowing career, I spent several years training on the US National Team.
Trying to be the best in the world at something gives you some take-aways that you can apply to just about anything in your life…and I have drawn from that to build our company.
You can even tell by the way a guy sweeps up at the end of the day. Is he taking pride in what he’s doing?⠀
