Meet the Carpenter: MattBangsWood - "Construction is Losing its Stigma."
I grew up in a family of tradesmen. My grandfather was a mason by trade, later turned builder when he went into business for himself in 1977.
My father worked side by side with him from a very early age, learning the ropes and building homes from the ground up all over California.
The torch has been passed to my Father who is now a general contractor, where I work side by side with him, learning every step of the way.
How'd you get into the industry?
I got my start in the trades after having children at a young age of 15. I needed steady income that would support a family of three.
I recall a conversation with my Father about becoming a Pizza Delivery Driver, and unfortunately I can't tell you his response due to foul language.
Shortly after, I got my first set of Husky Tool Bags from Home Depot, and went to work as a laborer.
8 years later, he and I are still working together every day, framing some of the nicest homes in the area.
I'm married to my high school sweetheart and we have two beautiful girls together. I wouldn't change a thing if I could!
What makes you excited about the future of construction?
Social Media has changed the way the trades are viewed.
"We're seeing more females coming into the industry. We're losing the stigma that the construction industry is only for criminals. And overall, the industry is making it a better career path."
I'm excited to see how the industry changes over the next 10-20 years.
As one generation leaves the trades and the new generation enters.
I'm also hoping to see a bigger push throughout High Schools across the U.S. for hands-on career paths, leading these kids to a great career opportunity, as college isn't for everyone.
What's your mantra?
"Be humble."
Where can people connect with you?
